ReOak California Distribution Project ~ February 24, 2019
In the past 70 years more than 1 million acres of oak habitat has been lost to development, disease and habitat decimation in California. ReOak CA is a project of the California Native Plant Society who, following the 2017 wildfires, launched ReOak Wine Country. Volunteers gathered hundreds of acorns in the wine country area and these were grown into seedlings over the past year. 500 of these seedlings made their way back home to the Mayacamas Fire District the weekend of Feb 23/24.
Organized by the Mayacamas Fire Council, a community action committee formed to enhance fire safety in the Mayacamas Fire district , the project sought to help restore some of the trees lost in the fires. One of the objectives of the Council is to help evolve the mix of trees in the area towards more fire resistant oaks rather than bays and pines.
More than 20 local residents had signed up to receive their free seedlings in amounts varying from 5 to 50 plants. At the distribution center at the Mayacamas fire station on Sunday morning a stream of people came to collect their trays of tiny oaks and help reforest the hills.
